Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944) was a Russian-born painter and art theorist, considered to be one of the leading figures of abstraction in Western art. He understood his painting Composition 8 (1923) as the high point of his postwar practice. The work is a representation of his mature, abstract style, which uses geometric shape, line and color to create a contrasting yet balanced feel of both calm and chaos. Its title not only highlights the lack of representation within the work, drawing attention to the pure formal elements on display, but also presents an association with musical form and composition. Throughout his career, Kandinsky considered music central to his artistic practice, collaborating with composers to gain inspiration.
